Television/Getty ImagesWhat if I told you there was a streaming service out there that would provide you with a library of Studio Ghibli films, Criterion Collection classics, and beloved TV shows like Friends, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and The Sopranos, plus original content, including an upcoming Gossip Girl reboot? (And don't forget the #ReleasetheSnyderCut version of Justice League.) Well, that streaming service is HBO Max, which launched May 27, and it's not HBO, HBO GO or HBO NOW but something completely different.

Yes, it's a little confusing, but the upshot is that HBO Max is effectively replacing HBO but also acting as the streaming arm of Warner Media and adding even more perks on to all that. That means subscribers will have access to everything on HBO but also Warner Bros.-owned movie and TV studio properties, the programming of Turner companies like TNT, TBS, and TCM, and exclusively licensed deals with third parties such as Studio Ghibli. That is all to say that HBO Max has a ton of content out of the gate, with much more on the way, and it's why some of your favorites have been quietly disappearing off competitors like Netflix and Hulu in recent months.

But how do you get HBO Max if you're already a subscriber to HBO? Well, it's both sort of self explanatory and somewhat complicated. Let's dig in.

OK, I subscribe to HBO via my cable provider. Do I get HBO Max for free?

Probably! You get access to HBO Max if you already get HBO through AT&T TV, DIRECTV, AT&T U-Verse, Spectrum, Altice, Suddenlink, Optimum, Cox Contour, Verizon Fios TV, or various other 'independent cable and broadband providers.' So basically if you already pay for the whole HBO shebang, you will now get a bunch of other stuff, too. Your HBO GO app will also still work if you want to mainline HBO programming only, but it's effectively been made redundant with the launch of HBO Max, so make sure to download the HBO Max app on all your devices.

What if I subscribe to HBO via Hulu?

Same deal as above!

How about if I'm a Comcast subscriber?

On launch morning it looked like bad news for Comcast subscribers who seemingly wouldn't be able to leverage their HBO subscriptions into HBO Max, but that very same day the two entities made peace and now people who get HBO via Xfinity are free to get the streaming service. An added wrinkle: Comcast is launching its own competing streaming service, Peacock, which explains some of the earlier acrimony.

Wait, you didn't mention HBO NOW. Do HBO NOW subscribers get HBO Max for free?

Yes! HBO NOW launched in 2015 largely as a way to get people to thwart people from using their friend's or parents' HBO passwords to watch Game of Thrones. (Remember Game of Thrones? We've aged about 100 years in the year since the finale.) Long story short, if you already pay for HBO NOW directly or via Apple, Google Play, Samsung, Verizon Fios, Optimum, Consolidated Communications or Liberty Cablevision of Puerto Rico, you are now converted to an HBO Max subscriber. Note: Your HBO NOW app will magically morph into HBO Max if you have automatic updates turned on (or the next time you update manually), so no need to download the HBO Max app directly if you are an HBO NOW subscriber. And after some confusion over the many different versions of HBO a couple weeks after Max's debut it was turning HBO Now into simply HBO and 'sunsetting' HBO Go. Whatever that means.

But I get HBO through my Amazon account, or maybe my Roku. What about me?

Yikes. This is where you run into issues. If you are getting your fix of Westworld, Insecure, and other HBO programming this way, then you will have to throw down the money for HBO Max separately. To get it on its own, HBO Max costs $14.99 per month after the free trial. So you'd want to sign up for the free trial and then cancel your Roku or Amazon subscription to HBO once that ends. However, there may be relief on the horizon horizon for Roku users: Warner Media is nearing a deal to make HBO Max available on that platform. Keep checking back.

It seems like nine times out of 10, the wifi doesn’t work on planes, and yet you always plan on using it to catch up on the latest show you’re into. You don’t have to snooze on your neighbor’s shoulder, because, alas, the big players in streaming — Netflix, HBO, and Amazon, of course — have made it possible for you to watch your favorite TV shows and movies offline.

Those subway rides are starting to look a little more doable! Here’s how you can watch titles offline on some of your favorite streaming services:

How to Watch Netflix Offline

Netflix made it possible to download content for offline use in November of last year. Only select movies and shows are available for download, unfortunately, but that includes popular original content like Narcos and Orange is the New Black.

The feature is available through the Netflix app on Apple devices with iOS 9 or later, Android devices running the 4.4.2 update or later, and computers and tablets running Windows 10. Sorry, Mac users — you’re out of luck.

It’s relatively simple to download content: On the Netflix app, open the menu on the home screen (the three lines on the top left) and select “Available for Download.” Here, you’ll find all the content you can watch offline. Since it might be hard to find a particular title you’re looking for in this tab, you can also simply search for what you want to watch, and content available for download will have a downwards arrow next to it. All content that has been downloaded on your device will appear in the “My Downloads” tab.

Make sure to download your content before you go on that airplane and lose access to wifi and cell service. Netflix downloads take up a lot of storage, so it pays to first clean out your phone storage and only download a few titles at a time.

How to Watch Amazon Offline

Amazon was actually way ahead of Netflix — the site has offered offline streaming since 2015. Like Netflix, only select content is available to do so, but this includes Transparent and The Man in the High Castle.

Owners of Amazon’s Fire devices, who could watch offline titles long before 2015, simply need to click “Videos” on the home screen of their phone or tablet to access content.

Amazon Prime members need to download the Amazon Video app, which is available on iOS and Android phones and tablets (not desktops). A downward arrow icon appears next to movies and TV episodes available for download. However unlike Netflix, the app does not offer a way to only view those titles that can be watched offline. The app includes a “Downloads” tab where all your downloaded content is stored.

Amazon says on its site there is a “maximum amount of Prime titles” that can be downloaded across all devices on an account, but it doesn’t specify how many. To make room for additional content or phone storage, make sure to delete the downloads after use.

How to Watch HBO

HBO’s online streaming service, HBO GO, doesn’t itself offer a way to watch its content offline. However, there are numerous legal recording programs, both free and paid, that allow you to watch content offline. These services act like a television DVR and record content in real-time. So if you want to watch a two hour movie offline, it’ll take two hours to download the film for use.

One of these recording applications is PlayOn, which is available Android and iOS devices, as well as Windows desktops. The app is pretty convenient because it also works for other streaming services and can house all of them in one place. While app itself is free to download, it charges 99 cents for each recording, or less if you purchase a bundle of downloads.

Hulu, which has premiered its popular content such as The Handmaid’s Tale in the last year, said in January it was working on launching offline streaming “in the next few months.” However, Hulu has not provided any updates on this since the initial January announcement. Hulu did say, though, that this option would not be included as part of its basic $8-a-month subscription — users would have to fork up $40 each month for offline viewing that will be bundled into the live streaming TV service Hulu is releasing soon.

Showtime made offline streaming available in April on its apps, so shows such as Homeland and Ray Donovan that are not on Netflix, and content only available online on Netflix like Shameless, can be streamed offline. Other hit series like Dexter and Twin Peaks, however, are already available to download through Netflix.
